How does Johnny Depp make his character so unique?

I am an A2 Film studies student and studying on how Johnny Depp makes his characters so unique. The films I am referring to are Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Edward Scissorhands and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
Please help me

I've heard from a lot of folks, including Johnny Depp himself, that he researches his roles, the characters themselves, the time periods, where they lived, who they knew, what they did, how they thought, how they moved, and sometimes he adds his own interpretations. For instance, it was his idea to play Captain Jack Sparrow as though he were perpetually drunk. He also researched pirates of the time and concluded that they were "the rockstars of their day" which is why he chose to wear his hair the way it was as well as the jewelry.
